Kikai, 2026

Kikai extends WJP’s exploration of identity through an invented figure without a physical body or a past of her own. Developed through drawing, AI-generated imagery, and the reworking of existing scenes and performances, she moves through cinema, fashion, art, and internet culture. A recurring face gradually becomes a recognizable presence.

Through direction and selection, WJP constructs both the figure and the world she appears to inhabit. This process connects artistic agency with questions of authorship: what belongs to the artist, what is produced by the tools, and what remains the contribution of others, within both the source images and the systems used to transform them.

As Kikai circulates, familiarity, attachment, and rejection become part of how her identity takes shape. The work examines not only what AI makes possible, but how images acquire credibility, how attention gives them value, and how an audience participates in making an invented person real.
