Japan The Truth begins with an imagined version of Japan, shaped by distance, expectation, and what WJP had been told. The film unfolds entirely in reverse, symbolically rewinding those inherited assumptions as firsthand experience begins to replace them. As images and encounters move backward, spoken language becomes recognizable yet impossible to understand, placing the viewer within the disorientation of experiencing a foreign country. The resulting portrait is not the Japan that had been presented to WJP throughout his life, but the country as he came to understand it through firsthand experience.

What began as an attempt to make a documentary became a record of its own making and unmaking. WJP leaves his inner dialogue, doubt, and creative decisions visible, allowing the film to become as much about the struggle to make art as it is about Japan itself.
